Chapter Five:

Stay Focused

In the online business community, there's something called "shiny object syndrome." It's when you chase after every opportunity that you think could make you more successful quicker.

That's how I got into crypto. I let my attention slip. Instead of keeping my eyes on my current business, I looked at another thing, went for it, and, worse, sacrificed what I already had.

It was very easy to be distracted. It was fun watching the movement of prices — even much more fun to watch my money grow out of thin air right before my very eyes.

I mean seriously, doing FBA was hard work! I had to spend hours looking through online shopping catalogs to find products that I could potentially sell.

Then, I had to breakdown boxes of products into individual units, scan, repackage, then place a sticker.

For fragile stuff, I had to use bubble wrap while some items even needed to be shrink-wrapped using a sealer and a heat gun. I hated that part of packaging most of all and only took items that needed to be shrink-wrapped if they were worth the time and effort it took.

Then, once I was done repackaging according to Amazon requirements, I had to figure out how to organize the items inside the boxes to make sure they won't get damaged on their trip to Amazon.

It was repetitive and boring.

Crypto day trading, on the other hand, was a lot of fun and required minimal physical effort.

All I had to do was watch charts for certain flags and made purchasing and selling decisions right on the spot.

It was a bull market, and we made a lot of money. If I lost money today, I was always sure that I could make it back tomorrow or the day after.

It was fun, fast, and easy money. Of course, I let myself get distracted.

Look at where it got me.

I remember a saying my publishing mentor Dale L. Roberts once told me: "John, you chase two rabbits, and you get none."

He noticed right away how easily I could be distracted, especially with new opportunities.

I signed up for his three-month coaching program originally because I wanted to learn to write and publish fiction.

I got these two stories stuck in my head I've always wanted to tell, and since I already knew a lot about nonfiction publishing, I thought it was time for me to learn about the other side.

Also, I noticed that unless the author is a well-known celebrity, a lot of nonfiction books stop selling within less than a year. Sales of the books I published under my pen names started slowing down after about four months.

On the other hand, fiction books seem to have longevity. Just check out Tolkien's Lord Of The Rings. It's been decades since they were written, but they still sell.

Heck, they even made movies out of those books after over fifty years, and those movies sold very well too.

I wanted something like that. I still do.

But then, Dale pointed out that there are a lot more fiction books out there that don't even sell a single copy.
